Many of my students have asked for access to my M.A. thesis on tango that I completed at the University of Oregon in 2002. I had rewritten the first two chapters for use in my Dance and Folk Culture class at the University of Oregon when I taught in the dance department. I have decided to put it up as a page (beware, it's long!) that you can find under my list of pages: go to the right column of my blog and you'll see it there. If you are interested in the entire thesis (the rest of the work focuses on my fieldwork and the interviews I collected from tangueros in Buenos Aires), it is available for $15 from me, plus shipping if you live outside the Portland, OR area.
Thanks for putting this up! I plan to read it when I have a spare moment. (I once wrote a thesis on performing identity--especially gendered identities--through modern dance, and always in the back of my mind is the idea of returning for a PhD in dance anthropology.) Although it is pretty far away, I just got an announcement for this symposium and thought you might enjoy at least knowing that it's happening:
Call for Proposals: Imagining Bodies: Landscape, Memory, Community
May 13-15, 2010
The Department of Choreography, Institute of Fine Arts, Tallinn University, Estonia presents a symposium examining relationships between bodies and communities - looking at how dance and body based practices intersect with dialectics of nation and identity across shifting global terrains and economies.
Making a Proposal:
Please submit a 250-word abstract describing your roundtable, panel or paper. Proposals may be accompanied by a brief bibliography. Performance, workshop, film and installation proposals should also be 250 words, including an explanation of your proposal's connection to the symposium topic, and duration of activity. Please also include a link to an online video sample or, if it is easier, you may mail us a DVD. Please include your name, phone number, email address, affiliation, a brief bio (2-3 sentences), and any technical requirements (internet, power point, video/DVD, etc.).
Languages and proposal length: The working languages of the conference are English, Estonian and Russian - with summarizing after-translation (not simultaneous) provided. Because of this we recommend all papers to be talked through instead of read. There will be time provided for discussion after each presentation or panel, thus the paper length is 20 minutes maximum. All kinds of performative and discussion provoking presentations are encouraged. Please add to your proposal your technical requirements. Performances, workshops, screenings, installations, etc., should be no longer than one hour, including 15-minutes for discussion. Shorter proposals are welcomed.
Deadline: Proposals must be received by Dec 15, notification by February 2010.
Symposium committee:
Heili Einasto, Sille Kapper, David King, Cid Pearlman
Send your proposals to Heili Einasto:
heiein@tlu.ee (please write your name and "Conference Proposal in the subject line)
Heili Einasto, Kunstide Instituut, Lai tn 13, Tallinn 10133, Estonia
Participation Fee: There will be a small participation fee (under 40 euro) to cover translation and administrative costs. The amount will be determined at a later date based on conference attendance and availability of outside funding sources.
